Deb Dish – We’re talking fathers next week–Who do you think is easier to write, mothers or fathers?
Deb Joanne – Hm. That’s an interesting question. Seeing as I’m not a mother (or a father), I don’t have that firsthand experience to draw from, like Linda talks about below. But I think my answer depends on what I’m writing. For SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE, the mom is mostly absent in the book, but Lilah’s dad is a central character and I like that he’s very uncomplicated. Lilah has enough complications in her life without having to worry about figuring out her dad, too. So for that book, writing the dad was easy.
Deb Erika, for the record, LOVES Deb Joanne’s father character in SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE. He’s endearing and believable and sensitive and just plain wonderful–but you’ll find out for yourself soon enough!
Deb Molly Even though everyone hates Paige’s mother in THE PRINCESSES OF IOWA, I loved writing her. She was so clear and writing her dialogue was such a pleasure — an evil pleasure, perhaps, but a pleasure nonetheless. I look forward to meeting a father character who speaks to me that clearly.
Deb Linda For me, mothers are easier to write, because not only do I have one, I am one. It’s easy to draw on the wellspring of emotion that’s inextricably tied to that. Fathers are a bit tougher for me, since my own dad died when I was twelve.
