Since this week the Debs get the chance to talk about whatever we want, I shall talk about (what else?) FOOD. Specifically, breakfast, my favorite meal of the day.
Some of you may belong to the legion of “breakfast skippers,” a group as mysterious and foreign to me as otherkins. It’s not that I judge or mock you. I just don’t understand.
When I wake up in the morning, I am usually so hungry I have to consciously try not to gnaw off my own hand before I reach the kitchen. Whether this is down to a fast metabolism or mild hypoglycemia I’m not sure, but all I know is that as far as my body is concerned, breakfast is not optional. Unless, of course, you want me to be a crazed lunatic for the rest of the day, in which case…totally optional!
For special occasions (translation: when I get a major craving), I’ll make pancakes, eggs, waffles, muffins, and/or French toast, and nothing beats a hot, fresh bagel on a weekend morning. I’m also partial to thick slices of fresh bread, slathered with ricotta cheese and drizzled with honey. HEAVEN.
On an average day, however, my breakfast consists of some sort of cereal, hot or cold.
In the hot camp, my favorites are oatmeal, oat bran, and Cream of Wheat (if you want a real treat with that last one, swirl in some mascarpone cheese and maple syrup — YUM).
When it comes to cold cereal, I don’t mess around. I take my cereal eating very seriously and am constantly on the lookout for new favorites. For breakfast (as opposed to afternoon snacking straight from the box or dessert snacking in combination with ice cream), I want a cereal that is substantial enough that I don’t get hungry five seconds later but, at the same time, does not taste like cardboard. Here are some of my favorites:
- Puffins (original flavor — somehow these taste even better with almond milk)
- Kashi Heart to Heart
- Quaker Oatmeal Squares
- Honey Bunches of Oats
But, like I said, I’m always looking for new cereals to start my day.
So, with that, tell me: what are your favorite cereals? And what other breakfast options should I be rotating into my breakfast routine?
