Now, how about we learn a little more about Kerry and her books!

The girl with the full-body tattoo of a world tree is not just another runaway. She’s dead, for starters, and her veins are emptied of blood and oozing a strange, jelly-like substance. To Maureen Keslyn, seasoned paranormal investigator, former FBI agent, new owner of the Shadow Valley Manor Retirement Home, this isn’t just a corpse. It’s a sign that the Medusa, a dangerous paranormal hybrid, is on another killing spree.

Maureen and her team―Jake, the local sheriff, Matt, the Shadow Valley Manor cook with knife skills that extend beyond the kitchen, and eighteen-year-old Sophronia, who has an uncanny affinity for ghosts―are determined to hunt down and eliminate the creature.

Their case is complicated by the ghost of Maureen’s former partner, Phil Evers, who refuses to cross to the other side, and his very much alive daughter Jillian, who shows up demanding to know how Maureen inherited the Manor. When Sophronia uses her power to try to help Phil across, a huge spirit storm blows up at Shadow Valley Manor, and she disappears. With the life of one of their own in deadly peril, Maureen and the team have a ticking clock to find Sophronia and bring down the Medusa.

Rescuing abandoned animals is easier for Rae than attempting relationships with people. According to her therapist, she lacks a dimmer switch—her energy is either full-intensity on or off. Lately, she’s been opting for off.

But the switch flips back on when Rae’s car collides with a cyclist, leaving the rider fighting for her life. After discovering the crash was a suicide attempt, Rae invites the victim—emotionally and physically fragile Kat—into her home. Soon, Rae finds herself opening up, not just to friendship but also to the possibility of love with Cole, the crisis worker assigned to Kat’s case.

However, Kat’s pain threatens to overshadow Rae as their codependent friendship deepens. When disaster strikes again, Rae is desperate to help Kat heal, but the plan backfires, putting at risk Rae’s tenuous connections and forcing her to confront the most difficult challenge of all— embracing her own happiness.

Kerry, talk about one book that made an impact on you.

Today I am in Portland, getting ready to do a group author event with two other former Debutante Ball members – Lisa Alber and Susan Spann. You can’t top that for awesome!

Where do you love to be?

Home. On my back deck in the middle of my little forest, listening to the wind in the trees and watching the hummingbirds chase each other while I make up stories.

Do you have a regular first reader?

Yes! My Viking reads everything first. He is my continuity and weapons expert. He’s very good at saying, “Wait. That’s not possible.” Or, “Weren’t you headed north?” Or, “She can’t just wave that gun around like that.” He has recently discovered, since I started writing Kerry Anne King novels in addition to my usual fantasy and thriller types, that he loves women’s fiction. Who would have thunk it?

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Stop aspiring. Embrace the reality that you are, already, a writer, and that the most important and fabulous part of this whole publishing fandango is writing the books.

Have you ever tried writing in a different genre? How did that turn out?

Yes. I was first published in fantasy and took a side step into paranormal mystery/thriller. That wasn’t too big of a shift. But then I tried writing women’s fiction, and now I have two author identities and am trying to write one book a year for each of them!

Thanks so much for sitting in our hot seat and coming back to the ball, Kerryl

Kerry Schafer, who also writes as Kerry Anne King, calls herself the Queen of the Misfit Book due to a tendency to cross genre lines. She has published with Penguin, Diversion Books, and Lake Union Press. She lives in rural northeastern Washington with her Viking, where she works a day job as an RN. Never content to just be ordinarily busy, she also runs a creativity coaching practice, Swimming North. As Kerry Schafer, she writes fantasy and paranormal thrillers. Her Kerry Anne King women’s fiction stories — CLOSER HOME and I WISH YOU HAPPY–have both been international bestsellers.

Author: Jenni L. Walsh

Jenni L. Walsh spent her early years chasing around cats, dogs, and chickens in Philadelphia's countryside, before dividing time between a soccer field and a classroom at Villanova University. She put her marketing degree to good use as an advertising copywriter, zip-code hopping with her husband to DC, NYC, NJ, and not surprisingly, back to Philly. There, Jenni's passion for words continued, adding author to her resume. She now balances her laptop with a kid on each hip, and a four-legged child at her feet. BECOMING BONNIE (Tor Forge/Macmillan, 5/9/2017) is her debut novel that tells the untold story of how church-going Bonnelyn Parker becomes half of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo during the 1920s.
