3 Writerly Gifts That Involve An F-Word (And One Bonus S Word!)

Okay, so some of the goodies the other ladies here at the Ball have gathered for your holiday shopping (and drooling) pleasure have definitely gone right to the top of my currently coveting list. But here are a few more fun and super-writerly trinkets and treasures to make you want to ensure you’re on Santa’s nice list this year (even if you’ve been a bit naughty about missing deadlines and what not). (Oh, just me? Never mind!) Because who are we kidding here? You’re here because you’re shopping for yourself!

From The RumpusThe Mother of All Mugs Very few writers I know don’t need a cuppa — whether it’s tea or coffee, or maybe, uh, something stronger — by their side when they’re clickety-clackety-ing away. So treat them to this inspirational and aspirational mug, which I scored for myself (and for the husband!) at AWP in Boston a couple years ago, but you can handy-dandily order from the Rumpus’s store online! If that doesn’t get a butt in the chair, I don’t know what will! Writing on the road? They’ve got an awesome new travel edition, too! The only downside? This might be too much of a conversation starter when you’re trying to write.

Buy Yourself Some Freedom You know you need it — that killer Mac-friendly APP that happily disables your internet so you, fellow master procrastinator, can actually focus. And at only $10 a pop, can you afford not to buy this software? Your New Year’s resolution list needs it!

Word Jersey City/Chronicle Books Shine On, Baby! What’s a writer without a notebook? That’s right — just about nothing. Scribble in style with this AWESOME one from Chronicle books, which you can find at many a bookstore, including my awesome hometown fave, WORD! Whooohoo, shop local (or local to me, at least!). This one is pretty — gleaming gold foil scrawled across a deep black background, and your standard white lined pages for all your brilliant thoughts and missives inside. A must have for any serious (and confident!) writer.

And I promised a bonus, so here it is!
SCRIVENER. Do yourself a favor and get it already. For one thing, it’s a worthy writerly gift. For another, tax deduction for 2014! It’s worth it for the super-smart notecard function alone. DO IT. NOW.

An entertainment and lifestyle journalist published by The New York Times, People, ABC News, MSN, Cosmopolitan and other major national media, SONA CHARAIPOTRA currently curates a kickass column on YA books and teen culture for Parade.com. A collector of presumably useless degrees, she double-majored in journalism and American Studies at Rutgers before getting her masters in screenwriting from New York University (where her thesis project was developed for the screen by MTV Films) and her MFA from the New School. When she's not hanging out with her writer husband and two chatter-boxy kids, she can be found poking plot holes in teen shows like Twisted and Vampire Diaries. But call it research: Sona is the co-founder of CAKE Literary, a boutique book development company with a decidedly diverse bent. Her debut, the YA dance drama Tiny Pretty Things (co-written with Dhonielle Clayton), is due May 26 from HarperTeen. Find her on the web at SonaCharaipotra.com or CAKELiterary.com.

  1. This is slightly off topic, but inspired by your tax deduction comment. Do you know of any good resources on the web for the business side of being a writer? When can you count it as a job and not a hobby? Are you “employed full time” for the definition of your spouse’s FSA? That kind of thing. 🙂
