Since November 6, 2016, I’ve been vibing with Cassandra of Troy. I remember sitting outside on my parents’ porch with my mom and my sister around Christmas after the election and telling them that I felt like we had entered the darkest timeline. I remember telling them that I was afraid for the future of human rights, of the country as a whole, and that I was afraid that we would be witness to the fall of the American Empire. They laughed it off as if I were being overdramatic, but in the months and days that have passed, they’ve seen it happen.
We are watching the empire fall.
As the US holds children hostage in concentration camps, inflicting– as Julie so rightly said– epigenetic trauma on thousands of families, Americans claim that, “they broke the law.” As the US pulls out of the UN’s Human Rights Council, a political move that clearly states this administration’s complete lack of empathy, Americans make excuses about the flaws of the organization. As children bring guns to schools and murder their classmates, Americans refuse to call these acts what they are: acts of terrorism perpetrated by young white men.
The only perfect day I can imagine is one in which we, as American citizens, begin to once more value empathy and our fellow citizens.
yes, yes, and yes. these are grim, dark days and I share your dream of our reclaiming our country. That would be a perfect day.
