Which talent do you wish you had?

Singing. I love music, but I’m tone deaf. My singing voice is such that I was once asked to sing in a church choir, and after the pastor heard me practicing, he said it would be better if we gave our best fruits to the Lord. Since I can’t sing, I became a writer. Just kidding! I love writing.

Tell us a secret about the main character in your novel — something that’s not even in your book.

Lumi is a cat lady on the inside. If she could have 20 cats, she would. Unfortunately for her, her apartment building doesn’t allow pets.

Were you an avid reader as a child? What kinds of things did you read?

Yes, I was. As a small child I loved the standards like Goodnight Moon and The Velveteen Rabbit. I loved reading by myself and I loved being read to. When I was 13, I moved into the attic of my house and my parents had left their college books there. I started reading Anais Nin, Henry Miller, the Marquis de Sade before I really knew what they were talking about. I can’t say it didn’t have an effect on my writing.

Tell us what you’re looking forward to reading.

I am looking forward to reading A Sweet Mess by Jayci Lee. Clearly I love books that combine romance and food, and I am excited to see what Jayci did with it!

What does literary success look like to you?

To me, literary success looks like creating a community of people I can share ideas with and celebrate the best things in life with. It feels like more than ever, we can’t forget to celebrate even the littlest things.

From talented new writer, Yaffa S. Santos, comes this unforgettable, heartwarming, and hilarious rom-com about chefs, cooking, love, and self-discovery with recipes included.

Lumi Santana is a chef with the gift of synesthesia—she can perceive a person’s emotions just by tasting their cooking. Despite being raised by a single mother who taught her that dreams and true love were silly fairy tales, she decides to take a chance and puts her heart and savings into opening a fusion restaurant in Inwood, Manhattan. The restaurant offers a mix of the Dominican cuisine she grew up with and other world cuisines that have been a source of culinary inspiration to her.

When Lumi’s eclectic venture fails, she is forced to take a position as a sous chef at a staid, traditional French restaurant in midtown owned by Julien Dax, a celebrated chef known for his acid tongue as well as his brilliant smile. Lumi and Julien don’t get along in the kitchen–to say Lumi is irritated by Julien’s smug attitude is an understatement, and she secretly vows never to taste his cooking. Little does she know that her resolve doesn’t stand a chance against Julien’s culinary prowess.
