How does your garden grow? by Deb Jennifer

When we had our place in the woods, we had an amazing garden.  We took the ugliest part of our land – a flat area covered in logging slash, the clay lifeless and hopelessly compacted by heavy machinery, and turned it into paradise.  We planted cover crops, built raised beds full of rich compost.  We grew vegetables mostly: tomatoes, salad greens, sweet and hot peppers, garlic, basil, beans, peas, even…

Escape by Deb Jennifer

Last week, I got a Houdini action figure for my birthday.  He came complete with handcuffs, leg irons, rope, a straightjacket, and a chair to which to bind him.  I’ve been having entirely too much fun tying him up in various poses on my desk.  Escapology fascinates me to no end – in fact, a character in the book I’m working on now is a young aspiring magician and escape…

The Legend of Lamby by Deb Jennifer

When I was not quite five years old, we had a house fire.  My brother and I were in our grandma’s bedroom watching the Super Friends on Saturday morning.  Our grandmother was out getting her hair done.  There we were on the floor, cheering on Aquaman and Wonder  Woman, our backs propped against the foot of the bed, as the room slowly-slowly filled with smoke.  My grandmother had these funky…

Laura Lippman’s Latest by Deb Jennifer

The topic this week is What am I reading and why should you care? — at least I think it is.  Let me start by saying that I just finished Deb Tish’s TOWN HOUSE — but since it goes without saying that it’s an amazing book and you should run right out and buy a copy, I thought I’d write about another recent read: WHAT THE DEAD KNOW by Laura Lippman.  From…

On the merry-go-round by Deb Jennifer

If you walk into my house you can usually tell if I’m deeply involved in working on a book.  Once I’m sucked in, everything around me goes to hell.  The dishes sit undone in the sink.  Laundry piles up.  Toys left on the floor tend to stay there.  Taped to the walls are huge sheets of newsprint covered in story boards, chapter outlines and various other novel-related brainstorming. Coffee and…

Polly & Pretty Little Mistakes by Deb Jennifer

Since I am pop-culturally-illiterate, it’s a good thing I have something off-topic I want to post about.  Then again, music, the 80s, and Showtime are all mentioned, so maybe it does qualify?  Anyway…. On May 21 at 6 pm, I’m going to be at Mo Pitkin’s in NYC for a reading and reception with two other Harper debut authors, Amy Bryant and Heather McElhatton (rhymes with tackle-latin, if you were…
